V-TECH AMR SURVEILLANCE

V-Tech offers a surveillance programme for the poultry industry in South Africa. It addresses the concerns of the rising level of resistance to antibiotics developing in the E.coli population relevant to the industry. The program offers similar surveillance to the beef and pork-intensive livestock industries and consists of the following key elements:

  1. Specialised Minimum Inhibitory Concentration (MIC) plates containing a panel on anti-microbials are produced by V-Tech’s laboratory
  2. Regular swabs are taken from post-mortem samples or trans tracheal washes, and pathological bacteria are identified
  3. The pathological bacteria are exposed to different concentrations of anti-microbials on the MIC plates, and the optimal choice and dosage regime is identified
  4. From the above outcome, the veterinary pharmacist team determines the best treatment regime for the specific intensive livestock production unit

Want to know more about V-Tech’s sophisticated surveillance programme? Reach out to us, and we will answer any questions you may have.

MONITORING PROGRAMMES

V-Tech established a program to monitor the inclusion of compounded antibiotics into the feed and drinking water of animals kept in intensive livestock production units in South Africa.

The programme consists of the following two legs:

  1. Feed or water samples are regularly taken from the feed or drinking water of the animals treated for antibiotic concentration testing. This ensures that the animals are treated at the optimum dose.
  2. Tissue samples for residue testing are regularly taken at the point of slaughter. These tissue samples are analysed by Gas Chromatography Analytic methods to establish if any antibiotic residue remains in the meat sold for human consumption.

Constant communication between V-Tech and the responsible veterinarian ensures that the final product sold for human consumption is safe.

SPECIALISED DRUGS FOR EXOTICS AND WILDLIFE CAPTURE

South Africa is well known for its veterinary expertise in treating wildlife and exotic animals, however access to commercial medication for wild and exotic animals is limited and, in most cases, does not exist.

The V-Tech team of pharmacists and wildlife veterinarians are pioneers in developing compounded veterinary medicines for use in the treatment, sedation and translocation of wild animals.

V-Tech, together with a well-known veterinarian, specialising in exotics, has also developed a range for the treatment of exotic animals.

We have the insight, knowledge and passion for finding pharmacy solutions to treat these animals effectively, and we’re actively involved in evaluating the efficacy thereof.

Predator

Reg. No. V18003 Act 36/1947

Vitamin and mineral supplement for lions, cheetahs, wild dogs and other predators kept under intensive conditions. Predator provides the essential minerals and vitamins for predators kept and bred in captivity. Predator helps to prevent the problems associated with malnutrition or deficiencies in predators with a supplement specifically researched for the game farm industry.

Predators kept in captivity often develop nutritional deficiencies. Predators kept in captivity cannot supplement their daily diets as they would in nature. This results in shortages of certain key vitamins and minerals which can lead to reduced fertility, metabolic disorders and developmental abnormalities. Predator is formulated to prevent some of these conditions occurring in predators in captivity.

Feeding instructions:

  • This product can be fed to a predator of any age after weaning.
  • Cut deep slices into carcass meat to be fed, pour the powder into the cuts and leave to soak for about 30 minutes then feed to predator.
  • Dose at 30g per 4kg of meat (excluding bone and intestines).

Mino Max

Reg. No. V22590 Act 36/1947
Amino acid and vitamin supplement especially formulated for grazing and browsing wildlife. Mino Max has been designed for the fortification of important nutrient requirements for wild animals, especially in times of reduced feed intake. It contains essential nutrients supplemented to animals with nutrient deficiencies due to either poor feed quality, ill health, limited feed intake, animals in captivity being relocated or any other stressful conditions.

The high bioavailability of the 18 amino acids contained in Mino Max ensures that the animal’s daily amino acid intake is achieved. The natural ingredients used in Mino Max ensure the improvement of the animal’s performance without any undesired side effects.

Feeding instructions:

  • Mix 100 g in 200 l of drinking water (mix 100 g in 100 l of drinking water for animals in poor condition).
  • Discard the drinking water dosed with Mino Max after 48 hours as the product may turn rancid over time.
  • Available in a 1 kg bucket (10 x 100 g sachets) with a scoop.

Game Browser Boost

Reg. No.V19092 Act 36/1947
Drinking water supplement used to reduce the effects of high-condensed tannin ingestion in browsers and grazers. In periods of late rains, game and other animals, that would normally be grazers, turn to browsing to supplement their energy intake. Research has shown that traditional browsers have tannin-binding proteins in their saliva that negate the harmful effects of tannin intake. Game Browser Boost also helps make unpalatable plant material more palatable for the animals.

Harmful effects of high-condensed tannin ingestion include
• Depression of food intake
• Tannins binding with other dietary proteins and nutrients
• Interfering with digestion by binding with enzymes
• Other negative effects including absorption of tannins

Grazers have limited amounts of tannin binding proteins. Game Browser Boost is a supplement that will bind tannins and increase the digestibility of tannin containing plants. It enhances the animal’s digestive process and results in more nutrient utilisation. Game Browser Boost contains over 90% of polyethylene glycol (PEG), a material that is widely used to bind tannins in many applications. PEG has been tested extensively under extreme conditions for sheep, goats, cattle and grazing and browsing wildlife. Game Browser Boost can effectively be dosed by adding the product to the drinking water in levels based on the normal intake of water by a range of animals.

Feeding instructions:

  • Add 1 g – 3 g per grazing animal per day to the drinking water (approximately 25 –30 l drinking water).

Game Browser Boost is recommended during periods of drought or under conditions where grazing or browsing is limited, or when bush meal is fed. Available in 5 kg and 25 kg packs. Drinking water supplement used to reduce the effects of high-condensed tannin ingestion in browsers and grazers. Amino acid and vitamin supplement especially formulated for grazing and browsing wildlife. Vitamin and mineral supplement for lions, cheetahs, wild dogs and other predators kept under intensive conditions.
